Make an Impact Hero: Sabrina Gonzalez
Make an Impact Hero Sabrina Gonzalez
She cycles. She recycles.

When Sabrina Gonzalez walks the walk, she does it on a bicycle. Biking to and from work to save gas and carbon is only the beginning of Sabrina's commitment to a low-carbon life. Sabrina, HR Manager at Alcoa Fastening Systems in Carson, CA, recently helped spearhead the June 16 launch of Make an Impact at Carson, where more than 300 Alcoans got the message about saving energy, saving money and saving the planet through simple, low-cost lifestyle changes that can be done at home. A true environmental ambassador, she's been taking Make an Impact on the road, presenting the program to members of the Carson Rotary Club. Well done, Sabrina, a needy planet salutes you!

This is the first installment of a series profiling Alcoans who are making an impact on climate change. If you know someone who has gone above and beyond the call of duty, nominate them by clicking here.

Be a hero yourself and complete the Make an Impact calculator.

Alcoa Counts Down to Month of Service

A countdown clock posted atop Alcoa's website is ticking off the seconds, and Alcoans around the world are gearing up for the company's sixth annual Month of Service. The October event sends Alcoa's global workforce out to volunteer in Alcoa communities wherever help is needed. This year, Alcoa is planning more than 650 Month of Service events, including 50 environmental workshops and 61 outdoor cleanup projects. During more than 7,000 hours of service, 45,000 Alcoans, retirees and community members will partner with more than 800 nonprofit organizations and community groups. In addition to workshops and cleanup projects, Alcoa expects to plant more than 8,500 trees and recycle an estimated 48,000 aluminum cans.

America Recycles Day: Get Involved!

America Recycles Day, celebrated each year on November 15, is a great time to review your recycling habits and look for new ways to help your community save money and energy. You’d think recycling was a no-brainer. Everybody recycles, right? Actually, if you look at the numbers, you’d be surprised at how far the U.S. has to go. Our current recycling rate for aluminum cans, for example, is just 54.2%, ranking the U.S. well below the global rate of 69.1%. Alcoa’s goal is to raise the national rate to 75% by 2015. You can do your part. First, make sure you’re taking advantage of all the recycling opportunities available.

Alcoa Earthwatch Fellows: Back in the Field

They followed puma footprints, counted beehives, measured trees and took samples of leaf litter. They traveled to remote and fragile ecosystems in China and Brazil. After a week-long expedition, they came back to work ready to share what they learned with their colleagues and communities. This year Alcoa sent 25 fellows on week-long expeditions supporting scientific research on sustainability. The final expedition ends this month.
