Make an Impact in Independence, Ohio
Alcoa Power & Propulsion HQ in Independence, Ohio launched Make an Impact on July 27, with more than 70 Alcoans and summer interns learning new ways to reduce their carbon footprint and pitching in right away by recycling old electronics.
Aluminum recycling was emphasized by Bill Christopher, Executive Vice President of Alcoa Engineered Products and Solutions, “Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours,” Christopher said, “and last year, Alcoans recycled 14 billion cans. That really made an impact!”
AP&P EHS Director Jim Bollenbacher shared the benefits of the Make an Impact calculator first hand, “I thought I was already pretty green,” Bollenbacher said, “but it showed me how I could save $500 a year.”
AP&P employees learned about recycling locally in the County of Cuyahoga and about the sustainable city initiatives by the Cleveland Mayor’s office.
To help reinforce our commitment to greening the community, Alcoa and Alcoa Foundation presented the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition with a $7,500 grant to support efforts to improve bicycling and hiking access on the historic canal.
In the ‘green marketplace’ employees learned about composting with the Cleveland Zoo, sustainable products from the Home Depot and Shaklee; green volunteering with Engineers Without Borders; sustainable lawn care; electronics recycling, and other green community services.
The Independence kick-off of the Make an Impact program is the 8th launch in 2010 as part of a partnership between Alcoa Foundation and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. To date the program has helped Alcoa families and neighbors identify close to $1 million in energy savings - the equivalent of 2.5 million pounds of CO2.
