Make an Impact launches in Carson
June 16 marked the launch of the Make an Impact program at the Alcoa Fastening Systems Carson, California Operation. The two workshops reached over 300 Alcoans and encouraged employees to save energy, save money and save the planet through simple, low-cost behavior changes that can be done at home.
For the first time since Make an Impact launched in the US in 2008, Alcoa staff joined Alcoa Foundation and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions to report the business’ significant efforts in energy intensity reduction. Martin Ryan, VP of Technology at Alcoa Fastening Systems, presented the AFS sustainability metrics, baseline and targets in addition to the business case for energy efficiency. His presentation included interesting information, such as the fact that Alcoa spent $3.4 Billion on energy in 2010, which was 16% of our revenue. He also spoke about Alcoa’s strategic target of 20% reduction in the intensity of energy by 2020, from a 2005 baseline.
Bill Carrigan, director of Operations at Carson, stressed the importance of taking action both at home and at work towards environmental sustainability:
"Too often, we believe that as one person we can’t make a difference. But here at Alcoa, we are part of a great team. Working together to make even small changes in our daily routine can have a huge affect on our world. Simple behavior changes in the way we work, use energy, purchase goods and discard or recycle waste can contribute to Alcoa’s business sustainability and you will save yourselves real money in the process!"
A unique partnership between Alcoa Foundation and the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, the Make an Impact program includes a best-in-class carbon calculator that measures a household’s carbon footprint, recommends personalized action steps and calculates potential cost savings on energy bills. The Carson facility brought in two computer kiosks for three weeks following the rollout so employees could complete the calculator while on breaks at work. Out of everyone who completes the calculator by July 8th, two lucky employees will win new bicycles to further support a healthy, energy reducing lifestyle.
